Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Electronics firm Creative Labs has announced that it is outsourcing some operations at its plant at Ballycoolin Industrial Estate in Blanchardstown, Dublin, to lower-cost locations overseas. The jobs will be shed by the end of January 2007, following a global review of the company's operations. In December, the company closed its assembly-line operation, which made digital musical players. It is to be outsourced with the loss of 90 jobs. The company said a further 140 jobs would be outsourced, including the manufacturing and logistics functions at its European headquarters. However, the Singapore-based company said that its European headquarters, which employs about 200 people, will remain in Dublin.
