Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The component manufacturer Aspocomp, operating in the electronics industry, has completed the cooperating procedure which was initiated in November 2006. The negotiations concerned 430 employees in the R&D unit and in the factories located in Salo and Padasjoki. Aspocomp has decided to close down the production in Padasjoki in 2007. As a result, about 113 employees are to be dismissed including some workers of Salo factory as well. The Salo factory will concentrate on manufacturing of new technologically demanding products. Aspocomp has transferred a part of the production in Asia in order to be able to serve the customers in the fastest growing market in a cost effective way. In 2005, the total number of staff was 3,393 and the company reported a turnover of 154 million Euro.
