Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The traditional manufacturer of electric motors and drive systems, ATB, which is located in Spielberg, Styria, will dismiss up to 190 employees by 2008. This was announced by the company's CEO, Christian Schmidt, on 7 December 2006. Part of the production of lawn mower motors will be relocated to an ATB plant in Serbia for cost reduction reasons. The planned relocation will start in summer 2007 and be finalised in the course of 2008. The affected Spielberg site currently employs some 700 workers. According to Mr Schmidt the management is willing to initiate negotiations with the works council about the possible implementation of a social plan.
