Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
A Nottinghamshire tool factory appears set to close, and 190 jobs are likely to be lost with the closure, as it was announced on 5 December 2006. Management want to close the Dormer Tool plant on Shireoaks Road, Worksop, and move production to Brazil. Union representatives have travelled to Sweden to lobby senior executives of the parent company Sandvik Tools in an attempt to save the jobs. Staff say the decision is a 'massive blow' and they cannot understand the decision to close the factory given current levels of productivity.
