Description

'Magyar Határőrség (Hungarian Border Guard Service) is planning to reduce staff by approximately 1,200,' chief officer of the Service, Mr. Béndek, announced. He explained that so far as many as 800 employees indicated that they would submit their resignation, many of whom requesting retirement. Behind the restructuring there is an attempt to create an efficient, simple and more transparent organisation by merging the Border Guard Service and the National Police Forces. As Hungary is expected to join the Schengen area, the exact date of which is unclear yet, border guards will be responsible for monitoring only a couple of hundreds kilometres of borders outside the Area. With the merging, the establishment of Border Guard offices is expected under the National Police Office, while regional Border guard stations would perform police duties as well. Additionally, the dismissal of another 400 employees might be expected in 2007 as a result of significant budget cuts. Reorganisation of the Service is expected from early 2008 only, currently the closure of three Border Guard stations along EU borders is being discussed.
