Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
RTVE, the Spanish national television company, presented a Restructuring Plan on 10 March 2006 to the trade unions aimed at cutting down expenses, increasing profits and productivity, and renewing staff. The company has an accumulated debt of 7.5 billion euros and the Plan regards the dismissal of 4,150 employees, which represents 44% of the total workforce of 9,212. The trade unions called for a strike on 4 April 2006 and rejected the Plan arguing that it was not fair that the employees 'pay' for the debt that has been caused by different governments. According to the company the strike was followed by 61% of the employees of RTVE Group. On 12 July 2006 management and trade unions reached an agreement after a long and difficult negotiation. This agreement was approved by 76% of the employees in a referendum that took place on 7 September 2006. It regards early retirement for employees that have been working for RTVE for 24 years or more by December 2006 and also to those who will be 50 years old in December 2006 and have worked for the company for at least six years. Voluntary redundancies will be offered to employees who are 52 years old or over but have not worked for more than six years in the company. At the same time, the company has committed to create 1,358 new jobs and to turn 450 temporary contracts into permanent ones. The Ministry of Labour has approved the Plan signed by the company and the trade unions. Early retirements have already started to take place in 2007: 803 in January, 386 in February, 398 in March, 273 in April and 156 planned for May. The job reductions are taking place in time as planned. However, the process is far from being closed, since - according to trade unions- there are problems in its implementation caused by the formulae employed for the calculation of the retirement subsidy, the end date of the contract (which in some cases will imply inequalities in salaries) and the region of the worker (different tax regulation). Job creation measures have started to take place too and 809 new jobs are expected to be created in 2007. New job creation measures will be issued on 2008.
