Description
West Sussex County Council is to cut 340 jobs as part of a cost reduction exercise. The council said that 190 management posts and office staff would be gone by March 2007, but the cuts would not affect frontline staff.
Spokesman Steve Waight said that people need to realise that the delivered service has changed with time. He added that the money saved would be invested in frontline services. Mr Waight, the council's cabinet member for finance and resources, said the council was now able to look at its structure and make changes to bring it up to date.
'We engaged some consultants who have looked at what is the best in the country in terms of both private and public sector and we're modelling our structure on that best practice.'
'Just by removing a layer of management we actually improve service delivery by making it quicker.'
Areas where the funds saved from the job cuts would be spent include child care and a concessionary fare scheme for young people using public transport, he said.
