Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Ford Aquitaine Industries (FAI), the French company that makes automatic gearboxes for the US car maker, announced on 23 October 2006 its intention to cut 180 jobs between January and October 2007. It will be achieved by putting in place pre-retirement measures for workers aged 57 and more. To avoid direct dismissals and encourage the employees to voluntarily leave the company, Ford will offer financial incentives proportional to seniority.
It is the second plan of job reductions announced by the company in 2006. The reason for this second plan is that the financial results of Ford are even more worrying than when the first plan was adopted in April 2006.
