Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 26 September 2006, the Cologne-based publishing company M.DuMont Schauberg announced plans to reduce the workforce of the newspaper company 'Frankfurt Rundschau' by more than a quarter. No precise data were provided on the types of jobs that will be affected. Plans comprise the loss of 200 jobs until the end of 2007 and the reduction of an unknown number of jobs at local editorial offices.
In July 2006, DuMont Schauberg acquired 50% of the shares and one additional vote of the newspaper company from DDVG, the media company of the Social Democratic Party. It remains to be seen whether DuMont's job reduction plans will actually be realised.
