Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
De Mauduit, a manufacturer of paper for tobacco, announced on 19 September the loss of around 200 jobs between October 2006 and February 2007. The factory employs 942 people in Quimperlé (Finistère), in the west of France. The reasons given for the job cuts are strong world competition and a fall in French demand for paper. Since 2003, the number of employees has fallen from 1,050 to less than 950. The American group Schwitzer is the owner of De Mauduit factory.
