Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Workers have voiced shock at Thomson Holidays' decision to close its Glasgow call centre with the loss of 450 jobs. Staff at the site in Cardonald said the move would be a major blow to the local area's economy. The company said the decision was no reflection on staff but was in response to a changing market. Staff were told in a series of briefings that the centre will close on 12 December 2006. The Glasgow call centre is the firm's biggest operation of its kind, dealing mainly in traditional package-style holidays. A company spokesman said staff would be given help to find new posts or retrain. Sales director Derek Jones said the closure had been necessary because the travel market had 'changed beyond recognition' in the past seven years. More people are now choosing to book online rather than by phone. Scottish Socialist Party convener Colin Fox condemned the decision to close the call centre and demanded that Thomson rethink the decision. He said: 'The SSP offers its full support to the workforce in any action it deems necessary to safeguard employment and retraining rights.'
