Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 10 August 2006, Saint Gobain Glass Romania announced an intention to build a new plant for high quality glass manufacture at Călăraşi (South Region) by the end of September 2006. The capacity of the new plant was estimated at 180,000 tons of glass annually and the necessary investment at EUR 100 million. The production of the new capacity will be both for the Romania market (50%) and for the external market (50%). On 16 January 2007, the company representatives announced the start of production at the new facility on 18 January 2007. As a result, over 200 direct jobs will be created. Indirectly, at local level, the new investment will create another 1,000 job opportunities. In 2006, the group Saint Gobain, composed of 1,200 companies, one of the largest glass manufacturers in the world, has activities in 46 countries, and approximately 180,000 employees. In 2004 the glass division of the group, Saint Gobain Glass, reported a turnover of EUR 4.39 billion.
