Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Cable groups NTL Ireland and Chorus - now owned by American multinational UPC/Liberty Global - have announced plans to shed up to 350 jobs and may shut an NTL call centre in Waterford as they strive to compete better with rivals such as Sky. Management of UPC Ireland, the new parent company of both NTL and Chorus, have told staff that redundancies will take effect between September 2006 and March 2007. UPC Ireland was formed when Liberty Global acquired NTL Ireland in 2005 for 325 million and combined it with its existing Irish cable operation, Chorus.
