Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 6 June 2006, British American Tobacco, one of the worldwide leading manufacturers of tobacco products, announced its job reduction strategy for Germany. 250 jobs shall be cut at its plant in Bayreuth and another 550 jobs shall be reduced at the administration departments in Bremen and Hamburg till the end of 2007. In total, the group employs 1,801 people in Germany. Against the background of five tobacco tax increases in Germany since 2002, the company decided to cut jobs. Tobacco tax increases led to an ongoing decline in sales of British American Tobacco products.
