Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
British American Tobacco announced on 1 June 2006 that it will close its factory in Zevenaar in 2008. This factory employs some 570 people and produces 32 billion cigarettes a year. The new strategy aims to reduce the overcapacity and to increase the productivity. Future investments in the European Union will be in the ‘core-factories’ in Germany and Poland. The production of cigarettes in Zevenaar will be moved gradually to these other sites. The board will consult the works council about their intentions and will negotiate with the trade unions about a social plan on which 235 million euro will be available.
