Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Škoda Auto, the leading Czech car manufacturer, announced it had introduced a personnal audit verifying the usefulness of employment positions in the company, namely in administration, maintenance, logistics and spare parts distribution. This measure is seen as a threat to 2,800 jobs. According to personnel director Martin Jahn, who denies the speculation about the number of dismissals, the company considers some workers to be transferred within the company and some production activities to be outsourced at the national level. The German mother group Volkswagen has also introduced a saving programme that could reduce the workforce by 20,000 people.
