Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
A supermarket distribution centre has announced it is to close with the loss of hundreds of jobs. Staff at the Wincanton Logistics depot in Wellingborough, Northants, were told in March they may lose their jobs after the Somerfield Group sold Kwik Save. Wincanton - which runs the depot for Somerfield - said the centre will close by October with the loss of 380 jobs. Wincaton, which distributes goods countrywide, said the sell-off means less volume going through their depot. Transport and General Workers Union (T&G) regional industrial organiser Adrian Jones said: 'We are obviously very disappointed by this announcement'.
'We will be continuing discussions with Wincanton management to save as many jobs as we possibly can'.
Wincanton Logistics employs 27,000 people worldwide.
