Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Perutnina Ptuj, the largest poultry meat producer in Slovenia, decided to stop the production of turkey meat. The management claim that they did not succeed with turkey meat on the European market because their production (6,000 tons of poultry meat) is to small and they cannot cope with foreign competition. Additionally, the price of turkey meat on the world market has fallen. Most of the turkey production will be replaced by chicken production. Perutnina will partly retain the turkey meat processing, but strictly based on imported meat. Domestic turkey breeders will be offered to breed chickens instead of turkeys. Because of this restructuring process, 200-300 people will lose jobs. The management says that mostly employees, which have fixed term contracts, will lose jobs in a way that their contracts will not be prolonged. Reduction of employment among workers in permanent employment will be minimal. Trade union representatives claim that they have not yet any exact information on dismissals, but in the past all job reductions were done in a way of not prolonging the fixed term employment contracts.
