Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
A hundred and eighty staff at a Liverpool bakery may lose their jobs following the loss of a major contract. Sayers in Lorenzo Drive, Norris Green, is owned by Lyndale Retail Bakeries and runs 123 shops as well as supplying national chains and wholesalers. Half of the output from the business went to Kwik Save, which announced it was closing at the end of February. Managing director Michael Quinlan says the company will do all it can to reduce the impact on the workforce. 'As it stands, some 140 full-time and 40 part-time jobs could be affected,' he said. The company has started a 90-day consultation period with staff.
