The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
The new owner of Budapest Airport Zrt., BAA International Ltd. (UK), is planning to lay off 18% of the 2500 strong workforce in the next three years. Budapest Airport was privatised in 2005, the contract between BAA and the Hungarian Privatization and State Holding Company was concluded on 18 December, 2005.The new CEO of the Budapest Airport explained that laying off part of the workforce was inevitable in order to reduce the exceptionally high aiport taxes and costs at the Budapest airport. Such a workforce, he claimed, is too big for an airport of this size. Outsourcing and selling services are among other measures they plan to take to improve the efficiency of the airport, which would affect as many as 1020 employees whose jobs are protected by the collective agreement. The dismissal of 80 employees in the coming months was announced on 27 April as a first step of the restructuring. Early retirement and voluntary leave were offered to the employees and to date 190 of them left as a result of these job reduction measures. The current dismissals will affect those working in the management and in administrative positions mainly, said Chris Woodruff, CEO of the company. Trade unions claim, however, that the announced dismissals are unlawful, since no negotiations preceded them, as is prescribed by the Labour Code, therefore they plan to go to court. The president of the Independent Trade Union of Air-carrier workers contends that BAA breached the collective agreement and the privatisation contract, while the vice-president of the trade union of airport minibus drivers pointed out that since there is no workers council at BA at the moment, a collective redundancy has to be negotiated with the repesentative trade unions and with a committee of workers representatives.
