Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Seven hundred jobs are to be cut at the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust. On 3 July 2006 the hospital announced 300 job cuts including workers aged over 65 and those on temporary contracts. A further 400 job cuts were announced on 21st July when administration staff at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro were told their jobs are at risk. Managers say there will be a 30-day consultation period before any final decisions are made.
Receptionists, clerks and secretaries will bear the brunt of what the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust has called an 'organisational restructure'. The move is part of the trust's plan to cut a projected £13m debt, one of the highest in the NHS.
