Description

Czech mining company OKD is going to close Dukla mine in Havířov by January 2007 due to long-term insolvency. Almost 1,600 workers fear to lose their jobs. According to management, the majority of employees will be offered a job within other mines. However, the future remains uncertain for some 500 workers. Trade Unions are not protesting the downsizing but intend to focus on helping dismissed workers to find another job. Redundant workers will receive generous compensation ranging between 5 to 12 months pay, depending on lenght of service.

Restructuring of the Czech mining industry started in the nineties and resulted in the loss of more than 50,000 jobs, mainly in the Ostrava and Karvina region, which today has the second highest unemployment rate (14.5 %).
