Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Tulip Ltd is to close three factories in Somerset and Wiltshire are to close with the loss of up to 850 jobs. Two of the cooked meat plants are in Chard where some 300 jobs will go and one in Chippenham where 500 workers will lose their jobs. The Chard site is scheduled to close in early June 2006 and Chippenham in January 2007. The business announced its intention to carry out a phased transfer of production to factories in Cornwall, Norfolk, Leicestershire and West Midlands. Tulip blames the closure of the factories on the need to increase quality standards and reduce costs. Initiatives have been arranged to help staff find alternative work locally and there will be some opportunities for redeployment within the Tulip group.
