Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Del Monte factory which employed 1,200 people when it was taken over in 2002 is now at threat of closure with the remaining 250 jobs to go. Managing director Peter Miller said the company based in Methwold in west Norfolk has consistently failed to make any money since the takeover. Managers are now in discussions with staff and unions over the future viability of the site. Mr Miller said: 'Unfortunately, we have concluded that there is not business alternative other than entering into consultations with our employees to determine the future of the site.'
