Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
BSO Polska announced plans to close two out of its four sugar plants in Poland. This decision has been taken following radical changes to the EU Sugar Regime which are set to decrease prices for beet paid to growers by 40% and the support price for sugar by 36%. The management of BSO Polska have stated that its main priority at this time must be to understand the individual needs of the people most affected by the changes. The company is currently in discussion with union representatives and although it is envisaged that a number of employees will be offered the opportunity of redeployment within the remaining group operations, a proposed package of support is also being designed to include information and assistance for staff in finding alternative employment outside of the group. In addition, the company is looking to establish a training grant for staff wishing to learn new skills and re-train.
