As a reaction to recent changes in EU sugar production policy, the company management of Slovenské cukrovary decided to close one of its four plants producing sugar in Slovakia. According to the available information Agrana also closed its plant in Austria in Hohenau. According to the CEO Heinz Zemke, the restructuring is aimed at improving the competitiveness of the company in long-term perspective. Fired employees could find jobs in nearby new production plant built by the German company Draxlmaier .
