Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
U.S. aluminium producer Alcoa will cut 100 of the total 600 jobs at its plant in Drunen. The company will also sell its production site in Raamsdonksveer, southern Netherlands. The spokesperson did not say when the plant will be sold and who are the interested parties.
The spokesperson attributed Alcoa's measures to the increasing competition, overcapacity at the plants and high energy and raw material costs. The company will work out a social plan for the employees in Drunen. Forced lay-offs are not excluded and their number will reach maximum 50 to 60 in the coming year and a half. Trade union CNV Metaal en Elektro said that it would assist the redundant employees in finding a new job. Alcoa has currently 1,200 employees at its four plants in the Netherlands.
