Description

The National Forestry Authority (Regia Naţională a Pădurilor, RNP), which administrates the approximately 4.3 million hectares of state-owned forests in Romania, is soon to retrocede to former owners about 2 million hectares of wooded land. Consequently, RNP has announced a redundancy programme set to begin on 30 November 2005. According to the leader of the Federation of Trade Unions in Forestry Consilva (Federaţia Sindicatelor din Silvicultură Consilva, Consilva) out of the total 27,000 people currently employed, 7,048 will find themselves out of work. Company officials consider however that redundancies will not exceed 5,000-6,000 people but have stressed the fact that they cannot give final figures, as the exact surface of the land intended for retrocession is as yet unknown.

Trade unions announced protest actions, claiming increased social protection measures for employees soon to be made redundant. The Government initiated a draft ordinance granting redundant employees between 12 and 24 national average monthly wages depending on length of service.

On 10 November 2005, Consilva organised a picket outside the building of the Ministry of Labour, Social Solidarity and Family (Ministerul Muncii, Solidarităţii Sociale şi Familiei, MMSSF), as MMSSF representatives refused to pass the draft law. Eventually, protests ceased, when MMSSF gave its approval.
