Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
German discount retailer Aldi Süd started its local business in Slovenia, Hofer, in December 2005. The retailer announced an investment of 300 million Euro in the coming years and plans to open 10 further supermarkets in Slovenia. Up to 2,500 new jobs will be created of which 1,000 in 2006.
Aldi Group entered the Slovenian market in December 2005 by opening 11 stores under the Hofer brand name. By the end of September 2006, Hofer opened additional six stores bringing the number of workers employed by Hofer in Slovenia to 350. Long term expansion should bring the number of workers to about 2,350. By the end of 2006, Hofer plans to open 11 additional shops with each new store creating 15 to 20 new jobs, altogether 165-220 new jobs.
By the end of September 2006 Hofer has invested 29 million Euro in stores in Slovenia and by the end of 2006 the company invested another 19 million Euro. These figures only include the costs of the buildings. An additional 50 million Euro investment is planned for 2007 in form of logistical and distribution centre in Prevoje.
On March 12, 2007, Hofer announced its plans to increase the current number of employees by the end of 2007. The company will hire 600 new employees bringing the total workforce in the country to 1000 workers. Up to now the total value of Hofer's investment in Slovenia is more than half a billion Euro.
