Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The company A novo, specialised in the manufacture of mobile phones is based in Málaga (Andalusien, Spain) on the former Alcatel plant. On 31 May 2005, the company presented a job reduction plan affecting 190 employees. After several negotiations with the labour representatives, the management has not reached a satisfactory agreement.
On 8 June 2005, the management has announced the closure of the plant creating up to 600 redundancies if the company does not receive public aids from the regional authorities and if the regional authorities do not approve the presented job reduction plan. This could affect not only the 600 workers A Novo employs in the province of Málaga, but also 200 indirect related employments in the area.
