Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
County Council Prahova has developed a restructuring programme for Dalkia Termo, a company subordinated to the County Council Prahova, that produces and distributes thermal energy to residential and industrial consumers in the city of Ploiesti (Sud Region).
The Company currently has 767 employees of which 37 are operators in the control room. Most employees have a considerable length of service. Only 25 have less than 10 years’ length of service, while 321 have been with the company for more than 10 years and 421 for over 20 years.
According to the restructuring programme adopted by the County Council, 252 jobs will be made redundant. The programme is intended to increase efficiency in production and distribution of the heating agent. With fully automated equipment in place, retention of employees is no longer justified. Out of the total number of affected employees, 37 will be redistributed to other departments in the company, but the remaining 215 will lose their jobs. A social programme will be run over a four month period, to aid redundant workers find other jobs.
