Description
Colgate is to close a factory in Britain with the loss of 400 jobs. These jobs will be lost in the plant at Salford which is expected to close in 2007 ". Union leaders said they had been told production was being switched to Eastern Europe. Factories in Italy, Poland, Romania and Turkey will also be affected but the company's other British site - in Guildford - will not be. Colgate said: ‘During the coming weeks, the company will begin the process for sharing information and consulting with shop stewards, union officials and the European Works Council regarding the proposed plans for the intended closure'. The Colgate-Palmolive group said in December that it planned to cut 4,400 jobs and close a third of its 78 factories around the world under a restructuring plan.
