The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
School units in Bucharest are being forced to shrink their activity by reducing the amount of teachers working hours and teaching posts. The capital city and Romania in general are confronted with a demographic transition characterized by a falling birth rate and demographic ageing. In the period 1990-1994, Bucharest included around 25,000 scholars. Since 1999, by comparison, the number of pupils in a school year has fallen to 13,000. The School Inspectorate in Bucharest made public a list of 181 teaching staff whose jobs will be made redundant. Most of the teaching staff affected is working in primary schools.
On 25 and 26 April 2005, the teachers affected by the measures took part in public meetings intended to seek ways and means of re-distributing this staff to other teaching posts. Other 223 pre-transfer applications were scheduled for discussion during the same meetings. By the school year 2007-2008, the Bucharest School Inspectorate estimates an additional cut of around 1,500 teaching posts.
