Description

The ‘Modernisation Strategy for the Romanian Police 2004-2007', approved by Order of the Ministry of Administration and Interior (Ministerul Administratiei si Internelor, MAI), on 29 December 2004, and the National Strategy on Migration (accepted by Government Decision no. 616 of 21 April 2004) have in view complex measures for the restructuring of public order. The respective documents were drawn up taking into account the recommendations included in Country Report of the European Commission.

A major aspect is the tightening of border security, which is an essential objective in view of Romania's accession to the European Union.

Currently two new departments have been added to the Romanian Border Police: the Department for Combating Illegal Migration and the Department for Combating Cross-border Crime. The Romanian Police Restructuring Programme also includes hiring approximately 5,400 new staff members in the Romanian Border Police by 2009. According to the statement made by police commissioner Nelu Pop, inspector general of the General Inspectorate of the Border Police (Inspectoratului General al Politiei de Frontieră, IGPF), The Romanian Border Police is currently confronted with a 4,500 staff shortage.
