Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The company Robert Bosch is a multinational specialised in the manufacture of electric appliances for domestic use and for vehicles. The Robert Bosch Group has a total of 14 production centres in Spain, 3 of which will be affected by a job reduction plan. These are the centre of Buelna (Cantabria) with 200 employees, the centre of Pamplona with 164 employees and the centre of Lliçá d'Amunt (Barcelona, Catalonien, Spain) with 580 employees. The three centres are specialised in the manufacture of components for motor vehicles. Although the company has registered a 7,8 % sales increase during 2004, the company will launch a restructuring plan in order to improve the productivity of the centres.
No job reduction plan has yet been presented to the regional authorities by the Robert Bosch Group but it is said the plants of Catalonien and Pamplona are the ones to suffer major employment losses. The company has announced the job reduction measures will not be 'traumatic' even though a total of 340 people are to lose their job.
On 24 October 2005, labour representatives have announced the intention of the company to dismiss 166 labour of the Pamplona plant (Navarra, Spain) and 107 of the plant in Barcelona (Catalonien, Spain) by 2008. The measures include early retirement for workers over 58 years, a non compulsory retirement plan for those between 50 and 57 (with a minimum of €1,200 per month) and compensations schemes (60 paid days per year worked for those under 50). Other measures include the engagement of the company to rehire the dismissed employees in case of future production needs.
