Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
It is now believed that 450 jobs could be cut at a microchip factory owned by Dutch electronics group Philips in Hamburg. A dispute has been continuing since October 2004 regarding a reduction in labour costs at the site, and no progress has been made in negotiations. Philips is reported to have said that a fifth of the jobs at the site could be cut unless an agreement is reached. The factory employs 2,200 staff in total.
