Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Duales System Deutschland (DSD), the company responsible for collecting packaging waste under Germany's green dot recycling system, plans to cut its staff by up to 20%. DSD, will soon lose its current monopoly in packaging waste collection and is to undergo a strict cost-cutting plan. Its new owner, US financial investment company Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR), wishes to prepare it for a flotation in three to five years' time. Up to 70 staff could lose their jobs, although a final decision will not be made until DSD management has met with the staff council. DSD, which had turnover of 1.7 billion euros last year, is preparing to enter new areas of activity when it loses its current monopoly.
