Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Unions are seeking urgent talks with French car maker Peugeot after it announced it would cut 850 jobs at its Ryton plant, near Coventry. The firm blamed increasing competition in the small car sector for a fall in sales of its 206 model. Trade unions have vowed to oppose compulsory redundancies at Ryton, which employs about 2,800 workers.
In April 2005, when the first redundancies occurred there was some positive signs as unions representing workers at the plant said that there had been interest from other companies in employing those who have been made redundant.
Jim O'Boyle, from the Transport and General workers Union, was confident they could find new jobs as a job fair at Peugeot demonstrated that there were something like 1,400 jobs available. 'Companies like Aston Martin, Toyota, Nissan and the manufacturing and service sector were there, expressing a lot of interest in the workers'.
