Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
BBC director general Mark Thompson announced new cuts measures. The director general informed staff that an extra £35 million of savings will also be made on top of the £320 million outlined in December 2004. Unions have accused him of a ‘lack of clarity', and want to know if the new cost savings will lead to a further round of job losses. The total number of jobs lost as a result of Mr Thompson's cutbacks is expected to eventually exceed 5,000. In December 2004 firm plans were announced for 2,900 job losses. This new statement indicates that further job cuts will be added to that total. The additional cuts will be announced after they are put before the board of governors for approval in mid-march 2005. They are expected to affect news and sport; factual and learning, drama, entertainment and children's programme making departments. TV and radio output, new media and the staff in the nations and regions will also be affected.
