Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
After the announcement by Schefenacker that it was closing its Geislinger factory by 2006 due to cost considerations, the workers' council of the world's largest automobile mirror manufacturer, Schefenacker, wants to prevent with all means available the planned closing, in order to prevent the elimination of 580 jobs. Among other things, overtime work is being rejected in protest. IG Metal and the Workers Council report that the locations in Geislingen, Schwaikheim and Oberrot are being affected by the reduced working hours. According to management, the principal factory in Esslingen-Sirnau will not be affected by the job cuts. The company merely wants to relocate administration, operations, and development units to a more economical location.
