Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Alstom has announced it is to close their Eastleigh depot - with the loss of 540 jobs - by the end of 2005. It says the plant is running at only 50% capacity and there are not enough new orders to sustain the business. Alstom's operations director Rhys Jarvis, said: 'We very much regret having to announce the proposal to close the Eastleigh business. The market will not support the Eastleigh business in the future - there just aren't the orders out there locally to keep the factory working profitably'. Alstom have two other depots at Glasgow and Wolverton.
