Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The multinational company British American Tobacco, which employs more than 85,000 people worldwide, announced the closure of two plants located in Bologna and Scafati, due to the end of production on behalf of Philip Morris, which represented some 40% of the whole production of the former publicly-owned Eti (Ente Tabacchi Italiano). The procedure has been halted, since the sale agreement concluded between the Italian government and Bat at the end of 2003 included a clause that prohibits dismissals in the three years following the sale. Early November 2004, the company started talks with prospective buyers of the Bologna plant.
