Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Bewley's landmark Dublin cafes ceased trading at the end of November 2004, despite a campaign to try and save them. Some of the 234 staff have already left since the company announced the closures on 29 October , citing €4 million losses as the reason. Many others are expected to be redeployed to other jobs in Campbell Catering, the company that bought the Bewley's cafes. Redundancy terms of two weeks pay per year of service, plus statutory entitlement of two weeks pay per year of service - a total of four weeks pay per year of service - plus a further €50 per year of service, have been proposed for staff.
