Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Jarlan, a garment manufacturer, has filed for bankruptcy in December 2004; some 1,100 jobs are threatened. The company has accumulated debts over the preceding two years due to competition by low-cost garment producers in China and Bangladesh and to reduced orders by European buyers. The workers received a 3-month notice of termination of contract.
