Description
News International announcement that it would abandon its Wapping print site and spend £600 million on three new facilities. The new plants will be in Enfield, north London, Glasgow, and Knowsley, close to Liverpool. The move is also expected to result in the cutting of two-thirds of News International's production staff, or about 700 jobs, in the next four to five years. Many of the job cuts, which are not expected to come for two years, are expected to occur through natural wastage. The company said it would continue to house its editorial and commercial staff at Wapping, the site of a huge union dispute in the mid-1980's, but would shut its printing facility there in four years. The move was partly motivated by the huge increase in demand for colour advertising. The 22 new presses will allow the UK's biggest newspaper group to produce 120 pages of full colour pages in all sections, seven days a week.
