Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Colomer Munmany, specialised in tannery, is part of the Colomer Group, which specialises in the manufacture of clothing, footwear, gloves and leather goods. On 6 July 2004 the company presented a job reduction plan making 136 redundancies. The majority of the redundancies belong to the company's production plant in Montmeló (Barcelona), which would close.
On 22 July the company's labour representatives have finally accepted the job reduction plan. This involves early retirement measures for 57 year old employees with 82% of their salary and retirement at the age of 62. Other measures have been compensations of 35 days of pay per year of service up to a maximum of 28 months or 100,000 euros. The company intends to relocate the rest of the 407 workers of the Montmelo plant in its production plant of Vic (Barcelona, Spain).
