Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The directors of Frantschach Świecie SA have drawn up a programme of organisational changes at this Polish company, one of them being the downsizing of employment by 250 people by the end of 2005. Frantschach's management takes the position that such measures are made necessary by stiff competition in the European cellulose and paper markets, and also by the drop in paper prices (by 5-10% since 2000). This fall in paper prices is necessitating a reduction of production costs, hence the planned redundancies.
