Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The 200 or so redundancies at retail group Roches Stores are a result of the closure of 3 of the company's grocery stores in Limerick, Blanchardstown, and Henry Street, Dublin. About 80 jobs will go in 2 grocery stores in Limerick and Blanchardstown (west Dublin) respectively, and a further 40 or 50 in the grocery store in Henry Street (central Dublin). The majority of the workers are represented by the retail and bar union, MANDATE, and a handful of SIPTU members are affected.
The terms agreed are 6 weeks pay per year of service for the first 8 years of service (inclusive of 2 weeks ppys statutory entitlement), and 5 weeks ppys for service in excess of 8 years (inclusive of SE).
There was a possibility of some re-location opportunities in the non-food area of the company's operations, but it is understood that few people chose to take up this option.
