Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Today Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG of Kiel is the largest German shipyard and the parent company of an international shipbuilding group. Together with its subsidiaries, the HDW group employs some 6,500 people in Germany, Greece and Sweden. The group has its head offices in Kiel . Its main activities are concentrated in Kiel (Germany), Karlskrona (Sweden), Malmö (Sweden), Rendsburg (Germany) and Skaramanga (Greece).
"A thorough restructuring program is the answer from Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG (HDW), Kiel, to the dramatically worsened conditions of international competition in merchant shipbuilding and in parts of naval shipbuilding. The aim is not only to maintain competitiveness and the ability to survive in surface vessel and submarine construction but also to secure Kiel as a shipyard. This means that HDW intends to keep on building submarines, naval surface vessels, small cruise liners, ferries, large private yachts and special-purpose ships." (press release 02/11/2003)
