Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 2 April 2004 Arla Foods announced the loss of 340 jobs at its Preston unit. Arla UK was formed in 2003 by the merger of Express Dairies and the UK arm of Scandinavian company Arla, reducing the number of milk processors in the UK to three.
Overcapacity in the industry has resulted in consolidation as leading suppliers competed to supply supermarkets that are increasing their market share at the expense of doorstep deliveries. However, Arla warned that the ongoing integration of the head offices of the two companies will result in further job losses.
